In an effort to further women’s independence in the south of Hebron, the Unique Zan hosted a civil defense training program where women learned rescue, first aid, and evacuation procedures over the course of 8 weeks.
Throughout the training, women practiced a variety of hands on exercises, learning to utilize common tools to protect themselves and prevent common hazards. The group, comprised of 25 women between the ages of 20 and 25, are preparing for or are recently married and expressed the need to learn the basics of handling common household emergencies. They learned first-aid basics, practiced how to safely disarm gas lines, and fought fires in controlled environments.
While the program provided women with basic skills for civil defense and independence, it plays a large part in helping women in the region discover their strengths and capabilities, increasing their confidence and inspiring them to think creatively about possibilities for the future. This civil defense training is one of many programs offered by The Unique Zan that is making a difference in the lives of women in the most rural villages of Southern Hebron.
